Dorado Tacos: Baja California dreamers can get a taste of the sun-drenched West Coast thanks to new Union Sq. taco joint, Dorado Tacos. The Big Apple sibling of the Beantown-based original, Dorado’s speedily slinging out fresh, flavorful street-style tacos, reeling in NYU coeds and nostalgic Boston transplants with eight types of tacos, quesadillas, soups, salads and sides. Their best bite is the surprisingly light, beer-battered, crema-covered “Baja Original” (Atlantic whitefish, cabbage, pickled onions and salsa fresca, $2.95), though the spicy, savory “Chorizo” (topped simply with guac and pico de gallo, $3.25) is a close second. The tasty tacos are teeny, so you’ll need two or three to make a real meal, but at these bargain prices, a delicioso dinner definitely won’t break the bank. Though cheap, Dorado doesn’t skimp on quality, making everything from chorizo, salsa, to even sangria on-site daily (though the soft corn tortillas are shipped in from Boston). The chillbox also boasts sugar-sweetened Mexican Coke ($2.80) and south-of-the-border brews like Corona and Negro Modelo ($3.50-$5) to cool down all the spice. The slight 'n' bright 20-seater doesn’t spare much room for atmosphere, with a simple stool-and-counter setup, but what it lacks in sea-sprayed, surf-shack schtick, Dorado makes up for with some mean tacos, dude.
