Elevate: A velvet rope, burly doormen and some chandeliers...sounds like you're really about to "step it up" tonight, right? Well, no, because those things aren’t nearly enough to elevate Elevate from its B+T-friendly, Penn Station surroundings. Anyone subjecting themselves to the elevated cover charge is welcomed with a full frisk and bag search in a seedy hallway, before pushing through an unmarked door to the upstairs dance floor. (A lower floor is sometimes open for more elevated crowd counts). So, the place scrimps on real estate and the welcome wagon, but give it credit for a bangin’ sound system. Even if that system is pumping Elevate-r music for a crowd of barely clothed, barely legal girls who can barely contain their excitement about getting down. Meanwhile, slightly older guys in collared shirts grind along or just lurk near the stained banquettes that line the room. If that's your idea of a good time, make sure you don't miss the last train out. For the rest of us, it's later, 'Vater.
