Family Recipe:
In America when we think of a “family recipe,” we might recall a burnt meatloaf or some liquidy mac 'n' cheese—luckily Akiko Thurnauer has a family more obsessed with fine dining and quality ingredients than ours. Akiko brings her Tokyo folks’ unique specialties (and her late father’s crest) to the Lower East Side to present such exquisite small plates as squid ink dumplings ($11), “Daddy’s Favorite” brick chicken ($13) and “36 hour” short ribs (which is far longer than your pops would ever wait for dinner to be ready, $16). Seating is cramped (a fire-marshall-worrying 30 max) so get comfortable with your neighbor on some sake and Akiko’s Swiss husband’s desserts ($8-$9). In fact, Family Recipe’s haute cuisine is so good, you’ll soon forget the family recipes that made you hate the cuisine of your own.
