Fives @ The Peninsula Hotel: You’ll want to come here when the boss, the parents or your date is paying because you don’t get to be a five-star luxury hotel in Manhattan by touting happy-hour specials. Speaking of five, despite what the name may leave you expecting Fives is just off The Peninsula’s lobby, so while it does offer a nice view onto 5th Ave., you’ll want to head up to their rooftop lounge, Salon de Ning, for the million-dollar gander. While the likes of Adour, in the St. Regis across the street, get most of the hotel-restaurant buzz, Fives is a welcome, understated alternative. The place is popular amongst business folks and tourists (thankfully, we’re not talking the fanny-pack-wearing ones from the Midwest), so expect a business-casual dress code, well-prepared classic American fare and soft classical music or, if you’re lucky, a pianist serving as soothing ambient noise. Appetizers range from $13-27, while main courses go for $34-46 and in both cases, “light and healthy” options are highlighted. As for the booze, wine will set you back a cool $17-28 per glass, while cocktails go for $22. Sure, the sky-high prices aren’t for the wallets of us mere simpletons, but for a nice spot to take your visiting Daddy Warbucks, this fits the bill just fine.
