George Keeley: Amidst all the loud and highly besotted college bars of Amsterdam Avenue (Jake’s Dilemma, Bourbon Street, Brother Jimmy’s, et al), Keeley’s is a slightly more mature and quieter place. Of course, the ceilings and walls are covered in drawn-on dollar bills as per tradition and the joint also offers highly competitive dart matches, so this isn’t exactly a place for dying wallflowers either. You can make sure that dart elbow is limber by sampling from some of their unique 23 taps and a dozen or so bottled offerings (Cigar City Guava Grove, 25-oz. bottle for $20). The food menu is equally extensive, boasting the “best burger on the Upper West Side,” plus pub standards like fish and chips ($13.95) and five different kinds of chicken wings. If you’re hungry on the cheap, you can, of course, just salt your tongue with an endless supply of free popcorn courtesy a bar-side machine. But, we all know that inverse ratio between free popcorn consumed and pricey beer purchased!
