Girello:
Ah, Walkers: debatably the first, last and only remaining dive in the fancy-schmancy mommy ‘hood that Tribeca has become. So how do you think the locals reacted to news that the nabe’s favorite drinkin’ spot was shuttering to make way for a run-o-the-mill pizza place? Not well, but their fears were in vain: Girello (Italian for “baby walker,” an apropos double entendre for Tribeca’s parent set) has opened next door to Walker’s and is, in fact, the Walkers owners’ effort to showcase their spin on classic NYC pie. With a large window façade, Girello pleasantly packs in many small tables wrapped in paper as well as a fully-stocked wooden bar built for six (but strong enough for 10) rowdy patrons. The slightly-overpriced pizza may have you saying “meh,” but downing global brews like Peroni and Ommegang Witte ($7-$8) in the quaint, historic space will have you recalling Walker’s charm nonetheless.
