Since you're wondering, Gordon Bennett was a playboy newspaper magnate from Victorian-era New York, whose name later became an interjection in England. So the name of this W'Burg pub is not only synonymous with “the good life” (in the yachting / balloon racing sense), but with puzzlement, incredulity and even annoyance. This Gordon Bennett captures all that perfectly. For the decadence and opulence, you have a club nicely adorned with recycled wood and a slate floor that reportedly once lived in City Hall. The puzzlement? Well, that's a lot of effort for what is essentially Another Irish Bar (itself an odd thing to find at the foot of the Hipsterburg Bridge). In fact, the most noteworthy part of Gordon Bennett is the bathroom downstairs: Clean, fancy and huge, perfect for getting your freak on with a typical skinny, jaw-clenching local boy. Which is apt, as our newpaper magnate became infamous for ruining his engagement to a debutante by peeing on her father's fireplace during a party. This Gordon Bennett could stand the excitement.
