Grassroots Tavern:
Despite the prime location, this bar is easily overlooked. Without crazy marketing ploys, it can’t be easy to attract followers on St. Marks Place. The marked restraint from neon sets this tavern apart from its fratty neighbors. Like an old, kinda dingy lover, Grassroots can be counted on for old-fashioned beer, booze, and charm. There’s even a good deal of space in this dive, but don’t bring plastic—this establishment is true to its roots and deals exclusively in cash.
I stopped in the Grassroots bar Sunday aftrenoon for the first time since 1991. It hasn't changed. The only exception is two bartenders I knew are no longer there. One passed away and the other is out of the business.

I've been on and off at the Grassroots for 5 years now (by off, i mean a 2 year exile in Buffalo, NY), and while the patrons now seem to be drifting away from older locals and more toward NYU-types and faux hipsters, the Grassroots in still my favorite bar in all of Manhattan to stop into for a cheap pint and to be left alone.
