Gypsy:
Gypsies have been popularly depicted as a cast of artistic hooligans, marked by flamboyant music, dance and fashion. New Greenpoint hole-in-the-wall Gypsy has seemingly little of the colorful character associated with its namesake, but that shouldn’t preclude you from making it a stop on your own roam around the trendy nabe. In place of kitsch or baubles, Gypsy’s tiny space exudes an understated coolness with iron fixtures and dark wooden café tables. Standard drink offerings, including a whopping 12 drafts, are served up at a small but cozy bar that encourages chatter among patrons and the bartender. A decent-sized bar menu includes standout fish tacos ($2 each), and hummus served up with crispy deep-fried pita ($5). The real steal? All food and drinks are half-off until 8pm. In a hood packed with new bars, plot your evening’s mischief at Gypsy and leave feeling woozy, but not swindled.
