If Benihana and Bennigan’s merged, the result would be something like Gyu-Kaku. Don’t get us wrong; the food at this charcoal Japanese BBQ lounge is fantastic (it is served “yakiniku”-style, which means there’s a tiny grill in the center of each table for you to cook your own meat) and well-priced; it’s just that the service is overly bright and chipper for the subdued ambiance the place strives for. Happy hour runs from 10pm to close and the beers and entrées are more affordable than most other spots in the ’hood. Adventurous diners will be delighted at the prospect of grilling up their own slab of beef tongue, while their more weary friends can numb their fears with one of Gyu-Kaku’s hot or cold sakes and reward their bravery with savory S’mores.
