HaChi Restaurant & Lounge:
This LES duplex lounge has all the makings of a great after-work Midtown happy hour…which is unfortunate, since most of the people who are into that sort of thing stick to Midtown. The two-story floor-to-ceiling windows nothing to balk at; they douse the place in daylight and display the antics of always-bustling Orchard Street. After dark, the interior is lit by the cool glow of blue neon piping and jellyfish-style LEDs hanging above the bar, which illuminate both the minimalistic Japanese décor and the eclectic crowd. The neighborhood newcomer does have its perks (and potential), including an extensive French-Asian-fusion menu (try the filet mignon with potato wasabi spring roll, carrot-ginger puree and sweet-and-sour peppercorns, $16). The trendy, lofted seating area is peppered with a maze of white benches and ottomans and is perfect territory for unwinding with a crew. But like any Midtown-er trying to make it with the cool downtown crowd, HaChi (meaning lucky number “eight” in Japanese) might need just that to find its role in this competitive 'hood.
