Hawkers:
Pass up that midnight Papaya Dog and give into the enticing smells of Southeast Asia coming from Hawkers, the new restaurant from the folks behind the East Village’s Friend House. Shrimp chips in creamy coconut pork dip or the fresh “Popiah” vegetable rolls, stuffed with jicama, cucumber, bean sprouts, peanut and hoisin-chili dip waft their way to the noses of every late-night snack-craving passerby ($4-$13). This Southeast Manhattan take on famed Southeast Asian food carts spices up its already hot cuisine with fiery red walls graffiti-bombed by Gano Grill, of the Wu-Tang Clan album art fame. Take out or eat in at the communal lunch counter-style bar where you can always strike up a conversation with the friendly staff. Wash it all down with a drink from their rotating selection of seasonal beers and wines priced affordably from $3-$10. Thanks to Hawkers, that trip to Asia just got a lot more affordable.
