It takes a "hell" of a lot of nerve to call your restaurant simply “Hell’s Kitchen,” considering it’s one of the gazillion restaurants in the ‘hood that bares the famous moniker. The audacity! Still, if there’s one place that might be able to get away with it, it’s this one. No, it doesn’t embody the roughneck Irish dock-working roots of the name—it’s actually a “progressive” Mexican kitchen—but it does fit perfectly with the buzzing, pre-theater vibe that defines the nabe now. With wine bottle chandeliers and colorful décor, beautifully-plated food and a looking-glass window onto a frenetic 9th Avenue, there’s no denying this place is hip. It can be standing-room only and even sport a celeb or two at night, so if you want to skip the crowds, you might want to check out their (surprisingly cheap) three-course lunch pre-fixe. Then when you tell your friends you’re going to Hell’s Kitchen, they’ll know exactly where you mean.
