Henry Public: Considering the penchant NYC bars have for nostalgia, going out in The Big Apple can sometimes feel like a history lesson. Case in point: Boerum Hill saloon Henry Public, which takes us back to 19th Century Brooklyn, where Walt Whitman once pondered the dirt beneath his shoes. Enter the joint through a small doorway leading to two shabby-chic rooms. Decked out in white paneling and erect wooden benches, the front space echoes your favorite scene from “Back to the Future III,” while the back pays homage to important characters from the past—like, oh, Walt Whitman. Now that you’ve been historically satiated, pick up the "Bill of Fare" and prepare to get actually satiated, with bizarre offerings like a turkey leg sandwich ($12) or roasted marrow bones ($8). Or, warm up with a delectable cocktail like the Patience (a mix of brandy, champagne and fennel, $10). As Walt himself said, “There will come a time...when nothing will be of more interest than authentic reminiscences of the past.” We think that time may be now. |
