Highpoint Bistro & Bar: From farm to table, with a stop off at…the supermarket? The appetizers at Chelsea’s Highpoint arrive at your table by way of itty bitty grocery cart, which seems out of place considering the restaurant’s shtick of “American cuisine straight from the farm to your plate.” Still the treats inside, like the "naughty calamari," do not disappoint, particularly when you're pre-gaming for a night on the town. The décor style is a bit confusing in general—one wall is lined with Pottery Barn-polished farm tools placed near two flat-screens tuned to Sportscenter—but hey, even locavores watch the Yanks. Adornments aside, the cocktail menu gets props for creativity and freshness (even screwdrivers are made with fresh-squeezed OJ), though one or two need to go back to the drawing board. The “Sunny Day in Chelsea” ($12), made with grapefruit vodka, elderflower and honey, is the highpoint, a refreshing summer cocktail befitting it’s name, but skip the "Plum Crazy," unless you're crazy for overly-sweet concoctions. Fortunately, the wine list features affordable options ($25!), and the beers on tap, like the hard-to-find Belgian Palm, range from $6-$7. At present, you're most likely to pop in here for a pre-dinner cocktail with your date, but a downstairs lounge in the works promises to elevate the nightlife scene to an even high-er point. |
