IL Bagatto
If you’re looking for a quiet rendezvous, this might not be the place, as it is always filled with hungry patrons who wait (and wait) for a seat. East Villagers have a lot of options so the fact that they’ll tolerate standing in this line, proves that it must lead somewhere good. The medium-priced food is genuine and the wine list is, well, Italian. If you can’t stand the wait, Rome next door to Il Bagatto’s sister wine bar, Il Posto Accanto (which offers an antipasti menu). It’s a romantic rendezvous for those couples that like to converse loudly in a rustic Italian atmosphere. The staff may be a bit abrupt, but just chalk it up to a cultural misunderstanding.

In a city as blessed with diverse dining options as NYC, patrons have the right to believe that ungracious hospitality is a capital offense. By that standard, Il Bagatto ought to be put swiftly out of its and our misery. Our group was made to wait an hour for a table (with a reservation!), more than an additional hour to be served, and--without exaggeration--our forks had barely hit our plates before bus boys began swarming around us to turn our table. To top it off, the unkempt, unshowered maitre d' (if you could call him that) told us it was our fault for coming to his restaurant if we expected to have our reservation honored... and that WE should buy HIM a drink for his trouble. Never again. Also, reviewers who write that this place is a good value ought to get out more. $16 for a small plate of box pasta, red sauce, and thawed seafood is not a bargain in this town; nor are $25 carafes of off-vintage cabs. L'Impero (a REAL Italian restaurant) does four courses for $42 on a Sunday night, and they actually treat you like a valued guest as opposed to an inconvenience for the staff. And if that's too fancy for you, you can get better food and service from the Olive Garden than at Il Bagatto; that tells you all you need to know.
