Jack's Wife Freda: SoHo’s already stuffed with snooty, snobby spots, so walking into Jack’s Wife Freda is a breath of fresh air. The charming, all-day café is a true family affair, cooked up by husband-wife team Dean and Maya Jankelowitz (they met while working at Balthazar—talk about a meet cute!) and named after Dean’s grandparents, Jack and Freda (natch). The doodled menu boasts passed-down plates like “Freda’s Matzo Ball Soup” ($6) and reps Maya’s Israeli roots with Middle Eastern touches like couscous, kebabs and chutneys. Get comfy with your neighbors at the long communal table and tuck into breakfast bites like the “Rosewater Waffle” (topped with Lebanese yogurt, strawberries and honey syrup, $8) paired with a Stumptown latte ($3.50), or casual evening eats like the simply tasty “Goat Cheese Baguette” (with golden raisin and pine nut chutney, apple and arugula, $10). At night, the peppy, personable baristas turn into bartenders, pouring out a small selection of brews ($7) from Goose Island IPA to Guinness, as well as wines by the glass and carafe. Outfitted with low ceilings, honey wood walls and leather banquettes, this hip, happy little spot off Spring St. will put a smile on your face and, even better, some yummy matzo ball soup in your belly.
