Jacob’s Pickles:
Deep South specialties have already hit the depths of Brooklyn and downtown Manhattan, but they’re moving on up to the Upper West Side with neighborhood newbie Jacob’s Pickles. The below-the-Mason-Dixon bar and resto wears its culinary heart on its sleeve, with a sign up front summing up the simple and simply delicious offerings: “Beer, Biscuits, Pickles.” The 150-seater’s slinging out good ol’ Southern-style fried fixins’ that are great for your taste buds if not your waistline, like buttermilk fried chicken with mushroom gravy on a big, crumbly biscuit ($13). Everyone from Southern transplants to Snooki to Shecky’s own will be “frickled pink” when they taste the namesake homemade pickles Jacob’s is peddling, fab in both fried and un-fried incarnations ($4 a pop). There’s even pickles in the potables, like a pickle juice-infused dirty martini (there’s also artisanal beer and American spirits for the more weak of stomach). You can bring home some Southern comfort with to-go growlers of beer and take-out mason jars of pickles. Jacob’s is going to need to add more menu options to stave off the dreaded fad label, but so far we’re liking what we’re eating at this South-inspired spot.
