Janis:
We all remember the notorious basement party...a grungy music/make-out/freak-out/drink-fest we snuck away to on Friday and Saturday nights. While we may have thought that the days of old were only found in Brooklyn, there is still one basement still in operation in the West Village. Meat Janis: A lounge crouched below the eatery of De Santos, tucked behind an unmarked red door and down a wooden staircase. The scruffy dance spot (named after the exact deceased rocker and former building resident you suspect) is a cozy, unrefined, shabby-chic atmosphere where the walls remain as rough as the well drinks. It's a place where “fashionably late” is right on time, where midnight becomes a magical land of dance, drink and beautiful people. There aren't any secret fliers to get into this place, and you won't be handed a red Solo cup upon entering. But bringing Bobby McGee couldn't hurt.
