Kaia Wine Bar:
Kaia, meaning “hut” in Zulu, is a term used by South Africans to refer to their home. Since its opening in mid-March, many neighborhood (and non-neighborhood) New Yorkers are making this farm-to-table wine bar their home. A candlelit space with exposed brick and rustic wood furniture welcomes tipsy couples and strangers happily chatting at a communal table (no doubt about how happy they are to see this place in the hood). The wine selection is heavy on Australian and South African pours with two draught wines from North Fork (yes, draught wine!). Beer ($7-$10) is carefully chosen and perfectly paired with the locally sourced and organic meat and cheeses. If you’re hungrier for something more sophisticated than Brother Jimmy’s but just as meaty, choose anything off the South African-inspired menu. Make sure to save room for the Malva, an apricot jam sticky cake, and we're sure you'll be saying home sweet home.
