Kajitsu:
It seems in this post-Kyoto era, the race to the “greenest” has now attracted restaurant players as well. Accordingly, Kajitsu chef Masato Nishihara (who learned his craft in—you guessed it—Kyoto) creates a new menu of painstakingly-prepared vegetarian cuisine monthly, each speaking to the tastes of the current season. Unfortunately, such intriguing fare aint cheap: tasting menus roll in around the $70- $50 rage. In other words, don't be too proud to do like we did and...“Let's just try the sake!” There's an extensive list to pick from, plus a more-affordable tasting menu ($14-30), which offers the gaijin a yummy alternative to the aforementioned "green" stuff. Just don't expect to end your party here. In a very un-New York-like turn, the restaurant closes at 10 PM, which means you can expect a Buddhist-temple level of silence to replace the bustle of 28 packed seats.
