The owners at Kinfolk have been told that the stark yet welcoming interior of their new Williamsburg watering hole is reminiscent of “a Tokyo ski lodge in the ‘70s.” Indeed, the long concrete interior (a bi-level revamp of an old garage) lends itself to Eastern minimalism while the hand-painted mural and rustic furniture in back leans more rural middle-America circa 1974. And it makes sense the space would read this way—the new neighborhood fave (owned by a team of mainly American 30-something designers) is a sister-resto to Tokyo-based Kinfolk Lounge and Kinfolk Biycle Co. The sleek space draws a hip, artsy neighborhood crowd (including many of said designers' buddies) who all seem to know each other and feel right at home striking up intellectual conversations around the bar. From seasonal plates ($7-$10) and hot espresso ($3) to happy-hour beers ($3) and incredible specialty cocktails ($8-12), Kinfolk has pretty much anything you and your kin-from-another-continental-origin would want for a chilled-out night in a chilled-out 'hood. Kampai to that!
