King's Cross:
While most bars (self-)appointed to the uber-trendy "speakeasy" genre are decked out with fancy tiles and expensive ingredients, King's Cross much more closely embodies the true spirit of a prohibition-era hooch haunt. Basement digs, low ceilings zig-zagged with piping, unfinished wooden walls and floors, and a bar showcasing exactly two types of beer on tap (Sweet Action and Guinness, $4 until 9pm) resembles the sort of place you'd expect to be milking your moonshine out of a barrel. But don't get the idea that King's Cross is some sort of dive—it may be dark and dungeon-like, but the bar is not grimy and neither are its late-night patrons. If you want to score a spot in one of the round, cozy booths, you’d best come early—the DJ starts spinning around 11 and the small space can get packed. Early birds will be rewarded with a sweet happy hour running till 9pm; just don't go asking for anything fancy—that's what all those suspendered mixologists down the block are for.
