King’s Head Tavern: Head to this Medieval-style pub during the week and you’ll feel like the King of the Castle, mostly because other than you, the friendly bartender, his four regulars and the guy in front playing surprisingly decent live music, the place is empty. Normally we’d consider this a bad thing, but King’s Head is such a perfect low-key refuge amidst a sea of frat-tastic bars (finally, no one’s complaining about not having to throw ‘bows to land a seat). Plus, how often do you find a cool, affordable joint you can completely invade with a large group of friends? The décor befits the name, with warm wooden benches, iron chandeliers, Renaissance artwork, antique books and a cozy fireplace for winter months. The real draws are the Happy Hour specials fit for a king (at prices that are right for the serfs) featuring $3-$4 craft beer drafts and $4 well cocktails. Or, elect for the King’s Special anytime of night, which features (we hope semi-ironically) PBR and a shot of Jim Beam for $7. Long live the king! |
