Kittichai: We’re always wary of restaurants in fancy hotels…more often than not, they fall victim to one of the three O’s: overpriced, overdesigned or overrated. Not so with Kittichai, the elegant eatery at the base of the Thompson Hotel, taking Thai food miles beyond the $7 lunch special we all know and love. If you don’t manage to score a table on their ivy-covered bamboo-enclosed patio, grab a seat by the bar and start off with one of their signature cocktails. Sure they hover in the $12-$16 range (what do you expect from a posh hotel in SoHo?), but try the “Muddled Grape” with Imperia vodka, Heidsieck champagne, fresh muddled grapes and young coconut, and you’ll be more than willing to dish out the extra dough for round two. But save some Benjamins for dinner—you’ll need ‘em (appetizers range from $7-$19, entrées from $22-$36). A lily pond serves as the focal point for the intimate curtained dining room, where romance and revelry easily intertwine. Yes, the menu is pricier than what we’ve come to expect from Thai food, but they’re not dishing out generic Pad Thai either (one bite of the Chilean Sea Bass will make believers of us all). |
