Kiwiana:
New Zealand meets New York with the aptly named Kiwiana, a small Kiwi concept new to Park Slope’s Union Street. Native New Zealander and Top Chef vet Mark Simmons (formerly of Slope spots Melt and Get Fresh Table & Market) stays close to his roots with his first solo venture. The quaint 40-seat space replicates his grandmother’s dining room (aww!) with a homey, '50s interior featuring pale blue wallpaper, vintage posters, and a china cabinet stocked with silverware and spices. The menu boasts classic comfort food with a Kiwi kick. The buttermilk fried chicken is peppered with horopito ($17), the baby back ribs are braised in manuka and Marmite ($17), and the burgers are made of NZ lamb and topped with a fried egg and pickled beets ($15). The bar is currently BYOB and still awaiting its liquor license, but promises a predominantly New Zealand and Australian wine list, as well as specialty cocktails and beers like Steinlager and Boag’s. Get the delights of Down Under without the astronomical airfare, and kick it Kiwi-style at Kiwiana.
