Kobeyaki: Chelseans can get a quick Japanese fix at the newly opened Kobeyaki, a fast-casual Asian concept churning out rolls, bowls, burgers and buns. Though the small restaurant sells itself as a speedy sushi and stir-fry spot, it’s a cut above fast food, offering kobe beef burgers with teriyaki onions and spicy mayo ($9), soft shell crab buns ($10), and noodle bowls topped with grilled shrimp and asparagus ($10). Sushi bar standards populate the menu, from spicy tuna to sesame salad, all prepared to order and adequately tasty. At night, the restaurant aims for an izakaya feel, with Sapporo, Kirin Light and Asahi on tap ($5), three types of sake ($14) and two wine varieties ($7) rounding out the liquor list. While everything at Kobeyaki is satisfactory, it borders on being too basic, and frankly, a little boring. The menu is typical and is matched by dull décor (one of the few decorative elements in the largely wooden space are oversized black-and-white Japanese characters). Kobeyaki eats are certainly of higher quality than your average Asian takeout, but the venue itself doesn’t warrant putting on pants and leaving your warm apartment, so don’t throw out those takeout menus just yet.
