La Camelia: This newly minted Mexican spot breaks away from pricey West Village standards with traditional (and cheap, thank God) Mexican plates and tipples. The red and green clay-colored walls are minimally dressed with stock Mexican tchotchkes (think ponchos, sombreros and a portrait of Frida Kahlo). Happy hour is daily from 4–7pm (available at the bar only) and is a killer deal. Come early for gratis bar snacks, like baskets of homemade tortilla chips with habanero and tomatillo salsas (with no charge for refills!). But before you snack your way into oblivion, save room for the Pulpo Veracruzano ($10), made with thinly sliced rounds of octopus, peppers, onions, capers, olives and serrano chilies. Naturally, you’ll be thirsty too…and La Camelia’s house margarita, the margarita clasica ($5), is a solid call for satiation with silver tequila, triple sec and lime. And with over 100 tequilas to choose from, it's safe to say that you won’t leave parched.
