If you set out for the evening seeking the likes of wine, women, mirth and laughter...you may come up short at La Carafe. Everything will seem okay initially—the wine will flow, the music will blast—and you’ll be stoked for a happy hour featuring 10 different appetizers ($20). But when that appetizer arrives, your spirits will be as damp as its wilting lettuce, watery tomatoes and poorly prepared meats. Drown your culinary sorrows in their fantastic drink specials, including $15 carafes and $5 glasses at the bar, all day every day. And thank goodness the booze is cheap—you’ll need it to drown out the increasingly noisy crowd of gays, older people and naïve Hell’s Kitchen barscape-curious folk. When it comes to mirth, you’re better off bringing your own carafe to one of the many neighborhood BYOB joints than hitting up this one.
