La Fonda del Sol: The name translates from Spanish as “Little Restaurant of the Sun," so you might be expecting a humble family inn in the hills of Sevilla, right? Sorry. Instead, this "Big Restaurant in the City" is an expansive, expensive corporate sports bar and upscale tapas joint servicing Midtown power-lunchers and Grand Central commuters after work. In fact, this place is really two little restaurants in one, starting with a casual front space for sangria sipping and tiny, tiny tapas (sixteen choices on the menu ranging from $3.50 to $16.50, and small to smaller). Then, when you’re still hungry afterward, grab dinner (suckling pig, $29; prime rib, $39/person) on the elevated back floor, complete with white tablecloths, piped-in Latin music, bullfighter paintings and a see-through glass wine room. It all feels about as rustic as a hotel lobby—albeit, a nice one—and if your daily routine doesn't involve a commute on the MetroNorth, you may never even end up here. For the rest of you, the service is good and the location is convenient when that 5:15 to Mamaroneck is inevitably delayed. |
