La Gazzetta: Part one of the Meatpacking mecca Villa Pacri, La Gazzetta is basically an Italian version of Pastis plus a little Bagatelle thrown in for good measure (not terribly surprising as it shares two of the latter’s owners). The open air café-style dining room is decidedly Euro with multi-colored floor tiles, rustic cast iron columns, elegant Italian marble countertops and a chandelier made of 300 wine glasses. Half the bar doubles as a to-go market, selling Italian groceries and snacks by day. But the takeout spot transforms into a champagne/oyster bar by night, perfect for killing time while you wait for a table (they don’t accept reservations). At the main bar, you’ll find a mix of Italian-inspired specialty cocktails ($11-$15) like the signature La Gazzetta—a mix of Aperol, wild cherries, Oronoco rum and agave syrup. Winos should forgo cocktails in favor of the wine by the barrel, tapped keg-style to bring affordable glasses (starting at $6!), quartinos and carafes to those who arrive senza corporate cards. The dinner menu is equally affordable, with locally-sourced panini, pastas and entrées ranging from $10-$25. By the time you get the bill, you’ll be so relaxed you’ll almost forget you’re in the Meatpacking, but then there’s the Beyonce blasting overhead and the Beyonce-look-a-like sitting to your right.... |
