Lantern's Keep: Though hotel bars in midtown are a dime a dozen, you’ll actually want to save your pennies for an evening at Lantern’s Keep. Located off the lobby of the Iroquois Hotel, the 25-seat cocktail salon is outfitted with marble tables, antique-finished mirrors, large-scale impressionist paintings, candelabras and fresh flowers. Sure, this may sound a bit stale to some, but rest assured that the cocktails are anything but. Mixologist Meaghan Dorman of Raines Law Room juices limes and muddles raspberries for creations like the Floradora (gin, raspberry, lime, lemon, ginger syrup and club soda, $14) and the Wildest Redhead (scotch, lemon, honey, allspice dram and cherry heering, $14), each requiring a particular specialty ice—hey, after all that work, it would be a shame to water the drink down! Small plates like butternut squash wontons in herbed parmesan broth ($8) are currently available from Triomphe, the hotel’s restaurant, though the bar will soon have its own kitchen. Okay, so a quiet midtown bar may not be everyone’s first choice for a night on the town, but with offerings this good, it should be.
