Libation:
Libation has risen from its ashes and the Lower East Side is officially undergoing a shabby-to-chic fashion ambush. On the first floor of this laidback, semi-industrial beauty is a long bar that runs opposite a wall of banquettes. Here a slender, black-clad staff brings $10 cocktails like the gin, cucumber, mint, and club soda “East Side” to fashionistas looking for the next downtown hotspot. Upstairs, a more bottle-driven lounge with its own bar overlooks the first floor while an ’80s- and hip-hop-spinning DJ works Wednesday through Saturday. Both floors offer an “American tapas” menu featuring tasty $12 roast duck breast. Those displeased to see sexy lounges in this rockin’ neighborhood would be well served to remember that this building housed an upscale lounge/restaurant when Pianos was still a music store. (Fittingly, the former inhabitant, Torch, burned down.)
One of those sweaty, pushy-shovey, step on broken glass kind of scenes. Although , I was there for a college party. The bar staff was nice, and the upstairs areas were much more pleasant to be in. Went on a Friday night - the initial level was a great drink-spiller. If you like getting tossed around in a crowd, stick around on the bottom floor. If not, head upstairs.
