Lina Frey:
At a time when the Lower East Side nightlife scene is increasingly becoming younger and more bridge-and-tunnel, new French bistro Lina Frey is a welcome—and decidedly grown-up—addition to the neighborhood. The décor is minimalist yet quaint, with just a touch of an industrial feel—white tiles, high tin ceilings and antique lamps make the open-air spot stand out from its grittier neighbors. On a block packed mostly with pizza shops and the drunk teenagers who love them, Lina Frey's small plates are light, sophisticated, and easily mixed-and-matched. While the dishes—including French staples like mussels ($7) and crepes ($4-$6)—take the main stage, the bar need not be overlooked. A full bar is still to come, but in the meantime, the extensive wine, beer and sangria offerings make stopping in for just a drink worth it. A retractable roof, varied soundtrack and laid-back attitude could easily turn that one glass of wine into an entire evening affair.
Just as Celine M mentioned, Lina Frey is the new favorite neighborhood gem, the gem that everyone wishes they could find in their neighborhood. Even if you are not in the LES, Lina Frey is well worth the trip. I was in NY on business from Seattle, staying in Midtown, and found myself on the F train twice in one week to eat at Lina Frey. Happy Hour until 8pm – wow! The food is accessible and friendly French food – every bite was exquisite, raising pommes frites to a new level with truffle oil. Try the roasted cauliflower puree with a drizzle of sweet balsamic glaze – it could almost be dessert! Manon, one of the owners, makes her own sangria – always experimenting – find out what she has just brewed special that day. Lucky New Yorkers!
