The times they are a-changin’...and in a locale as diverse as Queens, it can be hard to keep up. But Astoria's Locale—founded in 2005—has thrived by shifting gears. It initially rode the boom of the Naughty Aughties, billing itself as a Manhattan-style upscale lounge in a burgeoning nabe. But when the behemoth new beer garden Studio Square opened down the block and began stealing late-night customers, Locale recognized its strengths and rebooted. Those strengths? A romantic atmosphere, with great mood lighting, soft music, plenty of candlelight, a solid Italian menu and orchid-garnished cocktails ($8-12). This is sweet news for all you sex kittens turned lovebirds, as date night at Locale is not to be missed. Dine on lobster ravioli ($12.50) and have an after-dinner winter cocktail like a Peppermint Hot Chocolate ($8) or Toasted Almond Martini ($12) on one of the couches. Just don't look at the menu too closely, as there's still a cocktail called the Panty Dropper ($12). Hey, change can take time.
