LOLA’s Living Room: Befitting a bar inside a hip, new hotel in the heart of the fashion district, Lola is one well-designed beast. Just off the plush downstairs lobby of the trendy Flatiron spot, Lola’s centerpiece is a glittery chandelier and its, er, drinkingpieces are a small selection of “signature” cocktails. It’s hard to say who signed off on these signature tipples though, because they’re fairly expected offerings, expensive but potent, like the dirty martini ($14). The crowd is...scarce, but those holding up barstools are of the tourist and/or European variety, the sketchier the better. Lola’s prides itself on its musical selections (“Gotham grooves” they call it—though who exactly prides themselves on non-live music?!), but the ambient sound is more annoying than pleasant. No food is available, so arrive well-stuffed, or “snack” on all the bar peanuts and martini olives you can filch. If it’s not your scene though, you’re within walking distance of other options.
