Lovers of Today:
Ever wonder what happened to all those kids that infested the East Village ten years ago to sit on duct-taped barstools, knock back cheap beer and listen to the Kinks? By the looks of it, the few who could afford to stay now seek to settle into leather banquettes, sip $12 cocktails and...listen to the Kinks. This sounds like a job for Jesse Malin, and since no one embodies the East Village past and present quite as much as he, it's no suprise his latest subdivision of The Niagara Corp.—named Lovers of Today—is well-suited for stately rockers (and perhaps, their young girlfriends). If anything, the former basement tiki room now acts as an overflow chamber for folks who can't get into Cabin Down Below (you'll be using the same side-street staircase). But don't expect anything pretenitous: the beer (incl. Sol, $6) comes in bottles, the cocktail list could fit on the J-card of one of Malin's old mixtapes, and you'll get your Kinks fix. So, it's a nice spot that serves its purpose...though it's way too early to start throwing the word "love" around.
I was recently out and about in the east village and came across this wonderful new spot on 7th. The cocktails are amazing and the decor is a perfect fit for the space its in. The girls and i really enjoyed our curly haired bartender, so much that we stayed for the entire night instead of just one drink as intended. I highly recommend this bar to anyone looking for a chill spot to sip a few and converse among friends.
