Lowcountry:
Named for the coastal region spanning South Carolina to Georgia, this West Village spot may serve staples like shrimp’n’grits, but it ain’t no country bumpkin. The décor mixes particle wood accents, exposed brick and hanging Edison bulbs with unique touches like stacked LPs on the shelves and doors serving as tabletops. Reading material is also readily available in the restrooms—the walls are lined with pages from novels like Naked Lunch and A Streetcar Named Desire. Though it is a full-service restaurant, the rock music overhead and high bar tables make it more conducive to a night of cocktailing and snacking on small bites ($3-$16). Grab a stool and sip on a Ginger Julep ($12)—a bourbon-based cocktail that’s like a mojito only better—or indulge in the recession-friendly All Night Good Times Special featuring a PBR and house bourbon shot for $6. After a few of those, you may be ready to take down their Fried Chicken Biscuit, a sandwich as massive in flavor as it is in caloric content…but no one travels to the Low Country to diet.
