Lulu & Me: Talk about an upgrade: trading crappy Quizno’s for roasted pork and radicchio-lined pressed paninis, new Gramercy gastrobar Lulu & Me has taken over the sandwich chain’s small storefront on Fifth and turned it into a sweet little tapas bar. From husband-and-wife team Michael Miele and Karen Fohrhaltz, the brains behind recently closed rooftop spot MeBar, the gastrobar pays close attention to both pub and grub, peddling Aegean-accented fare and an eclectic, extensive wine list (average glass is $10). The Mediterranean menu suffers from a few incongruous inclusions, with head-scratchers like Picholine olives, Asian BBQ beef skewers and salsa verde, but for the most part, Lulu & Me’s serving up solid Southern European eats in both small plates and more substantial spreads. For skinny Euro expats, a single small plate like crostini topped with roasted shrimp and lemon caper cream ($8) may suffice, but anyone with a good ol’ gluttonous American appetite should stick to heartier options like prosciutto-wrapped chicken with Agrodolce peppers and onions ($15) or pork braciola and polpettini with grilled polenta ($19). Located inside a landmark building, the small, subway-tiled resto’s kept the original wood floors and ever-trendy exposed brick walls, giving office dwellers a nice neighborhood spot to get their wine and dine on during hour-long lunch. Salute to that!
