Maialino: Taking over the space formerly occupied by Wakiya, Danny Meyer's Maialino is an Italian eatery located in the lobby of the perennially popular Gramercy Park Hotel. And while Wakiya (drenched in black and crimson, with curtains of red string) was painfully pretentious, Maialino sports Meyer’s signature look: modern, chic and laid back like Shake Shack. Windows looking onto the park, blue gingham tablecloths, cozy booths, exposed wood beams and shelves of wine make for the perfect backdrop to the Roman Trattoria-inspired restaurant. In fact, the only thing non-chill about it is trying to get a table at the damn place. The crowd that eventually does get in is a mix of older couples, out-of-towners, young fashion-types who do little more than push food around their plate. As for the food, prices are reasonable at $13-17 for pasta and $23-$32 for main courses, and how about this for a pièce de résistance: a whole suckling pig ($72). Now we know why the out-of-towners are here. |
