Mantra 986:
Mod, intricate décor, ashy veneer, Erin Cosby photography, and porthole mirrors are precisely arranged to create the annoyingly trendy Mantra 986. Surrounded by sports bars and Irish pubs, Mantra 986 makes a bold departure from former inhabitant Bar Room, a post-frat, young professional, B&T frequented spot. On weekends, DJs borrowed from 27th Street hotspots draw a “hipper” crowd. Midweek second-level diners get a view of Midtown via open air patio (weather permitting) and full-length glass doors. The menu offers reasonably priced small plates (Tuna Tartare, $8) and average priced cocktails. The beautifully tasty cocktails – like the Red Apple Martini – are well worth the $11 pricetag and drunken banker entertainment.
So basically we were throwing a birthday party for a friend and we reserved a booth at Mantra 986 by the DJ. We get there that night and the place was CLOSED....YES CLOSED. Over the phone I spoke to JORDANA and everything seemed really reasonable and they were willing to work with us.
Everything they said was an absolute lie..because they were CLOSED. How disrespectful is it...to allow your patron to bring 30 people to your establishment and you have your business closed that night...and you don't even CALLL!!!!! to tell somebody you weren't opening.
If they took money for the arrangement...they would have been in court!!! NO JOKE.....just letting everyone know...DON'T DO IT!!!
To add insult to injury, another party (bachelorette party) came while I was on the phone trying to get in contact with JORDANA (she never picked up after several calls) and they were booked the same night in our BOOTH!!! WTF!!!
One word TACKY! I hope they shut down for good!

I went on Thursday night for the Vodka hour from 6-7 and was pleasnatly surprised. The music was good, the staff was great, and the women were beautiful. (Try the Dumplings as an appetizer). Will be back very soon... Only Downside is that the upstairs section was not open. I guess I was there too early.

I attended Mantra 986 with co-workers Thursday night. The female bartender with a funny hat was extremely rude, inappropriate, and ignored the females who wanted to buy drinks. Management should review the bar staff and train the bartenders to be professional and polite, especially for a new bar.

This place was very impressive. I had dinner there early which was very exotic and reasonable priced. I planned to go downtown afterwards but the scene was so good I spent the whole night there.

Come on, the writer seems to be using the word trendy as a negative. If so I strongly disagree. Since when does creativity get such a bum rap. What should it look like " another Irish bar??? I find the interior to be easy on the eyes with a lot of for thought into the selection of materials. I think the food is great and I cant say how pleased I am that I can hear some real lounge music in this area when I am dinning! Do we really need another piano bar with a bald drag queen singing standards? I always find it funny how some people resist change up here. what do you people want the suburbs? WeLL I for one appreciate what they done. Drinks rock and the food is even better. Its 2007 people brass rails went out with 70's

This spot is definitely freshing for me, as I have lived in the Sutton Place area for seven years and never ever wanted to hang out on 2nd Ave.
Now I can have good food with a downtown vibe environment without having to go downtown!!
