Masak: Singapore native and owner Larry Reutens (Aquavit) brings a wealth of Southeast Asian flavors to his bright, well-outfitted 40-seater in the East Village. Part neighborhood spot, part intimate cocktail bar, Masak is hard to pin down—much like the Singaporean cuisine it brings to the table. A short and sweet tasting menu pulls from Chinese and Malay traditions with crispy pork meatballs ($7) and Quih Pie Tee: small, fried ‘’top hat’’ shells filled with hen of the woods mushrooms or more adventurous offerings like foie gras, strawberry and corn ($2-$3.50). Behind the bar, cocktail ace Jeremy Hawn (Mayahuel) creates an equally concise menu of stirred or (aggressively) shaken cocktails like the Bangkok horizon ($11) a frothy, savory mixture of muddled thai basil, tequila, housemade chile paste, lime and cane syrup. So sure, you could try to figure out what makes Masak tick...but like any complexity, it's much more meaningful to come figure it out for yourself.
