Matt Torrey's: Pencil Factory alum (and one time Jets to Brazil drummer) Matt Torrey has outdone himself with his new namesake bar, an elegant place that neatly suits this serene stretch of Bushwick Ave. Unsurprisingly, considering his lineage, the result is more than a bit like the Pencil Factory: quiet, dark, and wooden, a perfect for place for a post date pint, or an extended bout of relaxation. Laquered fine woods, patina'd mirrors, pressed tin, and amber bare lightbulbs greet suds-seekers, while, on a nice evening, the big windows open up, letting the breeze waft in. Grab a stool and enjoy a selection of 16 different draught beers—all native to our own Empire State—from neighborhood staples like Brooklyn Brewery to the obscure brews from Defiant Beer Company. Eventually, food will make its way in an adjacent space, but for now, one can enjoy sports on a big projector in the back (or avoid it in the front). Still, this venue works best as a speakeasy, where company and conversation trump music and hoopla. Hey, if this were our place, we'd name it after ourselves too. |
