For almost a year, Fort Greene residents speculated about the boarded-up storefront across the street from their beloved park. When the boards finally came down, they revealed—through an all-window exterior—a wine bar that combined classic elements with characteristics unique to the neighborhood. Mauzac, the first endeavor by longtime Fort Greene resident and wine lover Sali Shibilo, offers a wine list ($8-$12 by the glass) as diverse as the neighborhood itself, with aperitivos such as duck pate ($7.50) and cheese plates ($15) to match. Passersby are sure to salivate not only at the hundreds of bottles on display but at the sleek, yet inviting space: highlights include a copper-topped bar and the bartender's own colorful artwork set against dark brick and dark golden wood. Well-placed orchids and dim orange lighting make Mauzac a distinctly Fort Greene experience, and the perfect spot for a pre-dinner drink on bustling Dekalb Ave., or a nightcap following a film at BAM.
