Just when you thought South Billyburg didn’t need another neighborhood bar, along came Midway, the friendly dive to beat them all. Its retro arcade games and well-maintained pool table fit right in with the vague carnival theme (complete with a re-appropriated plastic clown head, often turned to the wall for patron comfort). Drinks are always cheap, but during happy hour (4-7pm daily), the always-smiling yet super-cool bartenders sling $3 drafts and wells—a deal that’s tough to beat even in this ‘hood. Bartenders here also serve as DJs, so come often and get to know your favorite—auditory offerings can range from Journey to Imogen Heap (or whatever the hell else Christine’s iPod is shuffling that day). Owners of Brooklyn faves Ontario and Boat have done it again, this time crafting a Southside pseudo-Cheers that’s even cooler than the hipster-free ‘Burg crowd that frequents it.
