Moldy Fig:
Named for the kind of jazz purist who eschewed paint-by-numbers playing, Moldy Fig is a new jazz club cum bar cum cafe on the Lower East Side. Featuring live jazz every single night of the week—predominantly in the form of spontaneous jam sessions (though, don’t worry, the artists appearing for the night are not spontaneous, check the Moldy Fig’s website for schedules)—the Fig is hoping to become a new cultural touchstone in New York City a la The Cotton Club or Blue Note. But, the Moldy Fig also features what they are calling “casual diversions,” like chess and shuffleboard, welcoming guests of all ages (although it’s hard to imagine the uptown stroller set enjoying these noisy, cramped quarters). A kitchen serving strictly small-plate fare is set to open July 4th weekend and for now, beer and wine are the only libations. Moldy Fig harkens back to an earlier time in New York and, aside from the lack of indoor plumbing back then, that’s probably a good thing when it comes to jazz.
