Mono + Mono:
If you think a joint hailing itself as an "analog music club and eatery" sounds pretentious, that’s because it is, but somehow this sushi bar/pub/jazz lounge remains as approachable as the dirty dives around it. Mellow regulars chill around the antique piano and quietly enjoy the jazz emanating from the towering open-loft DJ booth. The 30-foot ceilings and wall of displayed vinyl create a wide-open space that's rare in New York (and certainly refreshing). Though posh, Mono+Mono misses the mark with their bar—they've made the questionable choice to serve no hard alcohol...only soju, the national rice-wine of Korea. It's a delicious drink though, by itself or crushed with fresh fruit and presented to your table in a small decanter surrounded by an ice bath and freshly cut flowers. The drink, "Babies Favorite Soju," is certainly the preferred presentation, but not necessarily worth its price ($35 for 500ml). Neither is the signature fried chicken, which is delicious, but expecting people to drop $20 on a small order at a bar…well that’s a tall order.
Seared salmon with yuzu dressing... Grilled scallop with sea urchin... yum... it was one of best treat for myself recently in East Village! Awesome draft beer list, including Bengal Tiger and Pumpkin Ale... they were served in a wine glass rather than a huge mug which I liked it even better! The waiter told me that the beer was poured automatically from their unique beer dispenser which brought out the perfect ratio of cream and beer. AND the music... I was sitting close to the DJ box which almost resembled 'tree house' and the jazz vinyl from amplifier totally got me goose bump... the tune got under my skin... With the soul music with soul food, I finally found home to hang out(or in?) in East Village!
