Morso:
There’s nothing so-so about Pino Luongo’s new Upper East Side eatery, Morso, where Mediterranean eats and Italian fare rendez-vous for a sub-tropical vaca in your mouth. Sure, it’s quite the trek to this far East locale, but once you’re seated in the cozy interior (complete with original 1960’s poster art) you’ll unwind immediately. The name Morso means “bite,” so it seems natural that their excellently prepared contemporary standards come in both bite-sized and larger portions, with such highlights as spaghetti carbonara ($15/18) and sauteed scallops with black rice ($16/24) alongside weekly specials and seasonal sides. Their lengthy yet selective wine list can be enjoyed at the table or a small bar in the central space—but don’t go thinking you’re going to meet a honey on that stool. While the crowd leans younger than the neighborhood standard, you’ll find a lot of fams and here-for-the-food types who have little interest in mingling. But hey, once you get a taste of those gorgonzola fritters ($13/$17) with a side of wine ($8-$11), you’ll be too immersed in your own meal to mind.
