Mother's Ruin:
There’s no room for ugly ducklings in the trendy SoLitaly (yep, we’re going there) ‘hood. And thus, Room 18 has shuttered to make way for its swan-like successor, Mother’s Ruin. Mother’s décor is as simplistic and sophisticated as its menu, featuring exposed brick walls, an antiqued tin ceiling, a few cozy tables and two large banquets (snag the window seats for prime pretty-people-watching). Toss your 1am beer goggles aside—you won’t need them in this dimly candle-lit cove, and they wouldn’t be appropriate in a cocktail den anyway. The menu may not be extensive, but it’s certainly compelling: three expertly-crafted artisanal cocktails rotate daily to showcase various mixology skills. We can’t predict the future, but you can expect something along the lines of a house-made lavender gin with fresh lemon, egg whites and bitters ($12). And if you’re up for something completely different, there’s a good chance the friendly gents behind the bar will ask you to pick your poison then whip up a delicious bevy off the cuff. If only all mothers were so kind….
