Motor City:
White Stripes, Eminem, Detroit Cobras, Kid Rock…we get it. In theory, Detroit seems pretty cool. In reality, you don’t want to get any closer than this two-parts kitschy, two-parts divey theme bar where memories of Motown are all around. Actual car seats serve as banquettes, license plates and automotive signs line the walls, and the ragtag hipster crowd often looks as though it just crawled from under a ’72 Buick. Despite its ode to the Motor City, this scene is Lower East Side Manhattan from start to finish. The look is a bit cutting-edge, if not predictable—rockabilly chicks and greaser punks drink cheap beer alongside the occasional suburban weekender who thinks he’s fitting in better than he may in fact be.
